A listing for “pillow covers” may mean zippered protectors, everyday pillowcases or decorative shams. Decide which layer you need before comparing fabrics or bundle sizes. The right purchase should fit your actual pillows, include enough usable covers and suit the care routine you plan to follow.

Choose the cover’s job first

Cover type Usual role Buying detail to check
Pillow protector An additional cover around the pillow, beneath an everyday case Exact pillow dimensions, closure and the specific protection features described by the maker
Pillowcase The outer cover used on a sleeping pillow Usable size, opening or envelope design, feel and washing instructions
Decorative sham A styling cover, often coordinated with a quilt, comforter or duvet cover Insert size, back closure, decorative border and whether an insert is included

The Company Store’s guide to bed shams describes shams as primarily decorative, with details such as textured fabric, flanges or back closures. Read the exact listing before treating a matching bedding set as a supply of everyday cases or protectors.

Match measurements rather than a bed-size name alone

Check the pillow’s label and the cover’s size chart. A king bed can be arranged with different pillow sizes, so the mattress name does not establish the dimensions of every pillow on it. Keep rectangular sleeping pillows and square decorative inserts separate on your shopping list.

For a concrete size reference, the manufacturer’s cotton protector chart lists standard at 20 by 26 inches, queen at 20 by 30, king at 20 by 36 and Euro at 26 by 26. These are the named sizes in that product family, not a promise that every brand uses identical dimensions. Confirm the selected variant and its intended insert size.

A decorative border can add to a sham’s overall width without increasing the space for its insert. If a listing gives both an insert size and an outside measurement, record both. For a contour or unusually shaped pillow, use its maker’s compatible cover information instead of assuming that the closest rectangular size will fit.

Count the actual covers in the selected package

Read the package contents for the size you select. A single cover, a pair of covers, a pillow-and-cover bundle and a multi-piece bedding set are different purchases. The total piece count can include the filled pillow or a duvet cover; count only the covers of the type you need.

Planning example: a bed with two sleeping pillows needs two cases for one change. A complete spare change brings that to four cases. If you also want two protectors on those pillows, they are a separate two-cover requirement. Decorative shams do not automatically replace either part of that list.

Check the current SKU and contents when returning to a familiar listing. Product families can change packaging, and a question answered about an older item number may describe a different count from the variant now selected.

Read feature and care claims literally

A zipper tells you how the protector closes. It does not by itself establish waterproofing or any particular barrier performance. Choose documented features that serve your needs, then follow the exact product’s care instructions. Do not assume that all cotton covers, coated protectors or decorative fabrics share the same wash and drying settings.

Also consider whether the closure, seams and fabric suit daily handling. A decorative texture that looks attractive in a product photo may serve a different purpose from the smooth case you want to sleep on.

Build a small replacement list

  1. List each pillow’s dimensions and the layer that needs replacing.
  2. Record the required number of cases, protectors or shams separately.
  3. Check the selected size, package contents, closure and care directions.
  4. Compare the delivered total for the useful quantity, including any shipping charge.

Use the official cotton pillow protector listing to inspect its available size choices and current specifications. For the larger bedding layers, our duvet-cover sizing and set-contents guide explains what to check around an insert. Keep a shared list of missing bedding pieces before browsing the shopping and savings guides for your next household purchase.
