Before you buy
Base renewal prices checked at $120 Plus and $60 Club. Break-even is $3,000 qualifying spend at 2%; shipping and delivery examples use official current fee pages. Current FAQ/terms show $750 cap while some older marketing pages still show $500, so article flags discrepancy.

Quick answer: Sam’s Club Plus costs $120 per year versus $60 for Club, so the normal upgrade premium is $60. If you earn the full 2% Sam’s Cash on qualifying purchases, Plus reaches its basic break-even point at $3,000 per membership year—about $250 per month. Shipping and Delivery from Club savings can lower that number, but only if you would otherwise pay those fees.
Sam’s Club Plus break-even formula
Annual Plus premium − expected shipping/delivery savings − other benefits you will actually use = amount the 2% reward must cover.
Then divide the remaining amount by 0.02. Do not assign a dollar value to a perk you would not have purchased without Plus.
Start with the real upgrade cost
Sam’s Club’s current renewal page lists Club membership at $60 per year and Plus at $120 per year. That makes the standard annual difference $60. New-member promotions, employer programs or prorated upgrades can change what you personally pay, so use the amount displayed in your account rather than a promotional headline.
| Scenario | Annual qualifying spend | Estimated 2% Sam’s Cash | Amount of $60 premium still uncovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 per month | $1,200 | $24 | $36 |
| $200 per month | $2,400 | $48 | $12 |
| $250 per month | $3,000 | $60 | $0 |
| $400 per month | $4,800 | $96 | $36 ahead |
| $500 per month | $6,000 | $120 | $60 ahead |
These are illustrative calculations, not guaranteed savings. The 2% applies only to qualifying pre-tax purchases after discounts.
What counts toward the 2% Sam’s Cash?
Sam’s Club’s current Sam’s Cash FAQ and program terms say Plus primary members and complimentary household cardholders earn 2% on eligible purchases made in U.S. and Puerto Rico clubs, including Scan & Go, and through Curbside Pickup. Direct-ship online orders, home delivery orders, third-party purchases and excluded categories do not earn this particular 2% Plus reward.
Common exclusions include fuel, tobacco, gift cards, certain alcohol and dairy purchases, prescriptions and other categories listed in the program terms. Add-on members do not earn the primary membership’s 2% reward. Returns and adjustments can reduce earnings.
Policy note: As checked October 13, 2026, Sam’s current FAQ and legal terms show a $750 annual Plus-reward cap, while some older marketing pages still display $500. The $3,000 break-even calculation is far below either cap, but high-spend members should rely on the current terms and the limit shown in their account.
How shipping changes the break-even point
Plus advertises free shipping on eligible online orders that meet the current $50 threshold. Whether that benefit saves you money depends on the items, order total and shipping charge shown at checkout. Some products and services are excluded, and shipping is different from Delivery from Club.
Use this simple method:
- Open a typical order while signed in and note the shipping fee that a Club member would pay.
- Count only orders you would place anyway—not extra orders created because shipping looks free.
- Multiply that fee by your realistic annual order count.
- Subtract the result from the $60 Plus premium.
- Divide any remaining amount by 0.02 to find the qualifying in-club or curbside spend still needed.
Example: if your actual eligible shipping fee would be $8 and you place four such orders per year, the estimated shipping value is $32. The remaining $28 would require $1,400 in qualifying spend because $28 ÷ 0.02 = $1,400.
Delivery from Club can reach break-even faster
Sam’s Club currently lists these Delivery from Club fees:
- Standard delivery on eligible $50+ orders: free for Plus; $12 for Club.
- Standard delivery under $50: $8 for Plus; $12 for Club.
- Express delivery: $10 for Plus; $22 for Club.
- Delivery in three hours or less: $5 for Plus; $17 for Club.
At a $12 difference, five eligible standard $50+ deliveries—or five Express deliveries—would equal the $60 annual upgrade premium. Under-$50 standard orders save only $4 each, so they would take 15 orders to cover $60. Availability and eligible items vary by address and club. Sam’s Club also says add-on members pay Club-level delivery fees even when connected to a Plus membership.
A combined break-even example
Suppose a household expects $2,000 in qualifying in-club and curbside purchases. The 2% estimate is $40. If that same household uses two eligible deliveries that each avoid a $12 Club-level fee, the combined estimated value is $64:
$2,000 × 0.02 = $40
2 deliveries × $12 = $24
$40 + $24 = $64
That clears the normal $60 upgrade difference by $4. It is still only a planning example: use the fees and benefits shown for your own club, address and cart.
When Plus is probably worth it
- You reliably spend around $3,000 or more per year on qualifying in-club or curbside purchases.
- You use eligible Delivery from Club several times per year.
- You place enough eligible $50+ shipped orders to avoid meaningful fees.
- You will genuinely use Plus pharmacy savings or early-shopping access.
- Your complimentary household cardholder also makes qualifying purchases that feed the same membership account.
When Club membership may be the better value
- Most of your spending is fuel, gift cards, prescriptions, direct shipping or other excluded purchases.
- You shop infrequently and stay well below $250 per month in qualifying purchases.
- You rarely use delivery or shipping, or already combine orders to avoid fees.
- An add-on member—not the primary or complimentary household cardholder—does most of the shopping.
- You are valuing early hours or pharmacy discounts even though you are unlikely to use them.
How to check your own numbers
- Sign in to Sam’s Club and open your membership or Sam’s Cash dashboard.
- Review the last 12 months of in-club and Curbside Pickup spending.
- Remove clearly excluded categories and do not include direct-shipped or delivered orders in the 2% estimate.
- Multiply the remaining total by 0.02.
- Add only documented shipping or delivery fees you would otherwise pay.
- Compare that total with your actual upgrade price.
Keep a two-month check-in on your calendar. If your actual use is running below your estimate, consolidate orders and stop counting hypothetical perks as savings.

Frequently asked questions
How much spending makes Sam’s Club Plus worth it?
Using the normal $60 upgrade difference and the 2% reward alone, the break-even point is $3,000 in qualifying annual purchases, or about $250 per month.
Do shipped Sam’s Club orders earn the 2% Plus reward?
Sam’s current terms say the Plus 2% applies to qualifying in-club and Curbside Pickup purchases, not direct-ship online or home-delivery orders. Shipping can still create value by avoiding an eligible fee, but it is a separate calculation.
Does Delivery from Club count for the 2%?
No for the Plus 2% reward under the current terms. Delivery can still lower your total cost because Plus delivery fees are lower on eligible orders.
Can I use Sam’s Cash toward renewal?
Yes. Sam’s Club says available Sam’s Cash can be used toward membership renewal, subject to current program rules and an active membership.
Is the Plus reward cap $500 or $750?
Sam’s current FAQ and program terms displayed $750 when checked October 13, 2026, although some older marketing pages still showed $500. Confirm the current cap in Sam’s Club’s terms and your account.
