If a Target Circle Bonus is not applying, first confirm that you activated the exact bonus, identified the same Target Circle account at checkout and met the offer’s eligible-purchase rules. In-store progress may take up to 24 hours to appear. Online progress generally does not advance when you place the order; Target says it advances after the order ships, is ready for pickup or is delivered by a Same Day Delivery shopper.

Deal alert: These deals can change at any time without notice! Prices, discounts, coupons, and availability may vary by location, account, size, color, or seller. The price shown was reported when the deal was found or published and is not guaranteed. Always verify the final price and promotion terms before checkout.

Do not place a second order just because the progress bar has not moved. Work through the checks below in order, keep the offer terms and receipt, and contact Target only after the applicable processing window has passed.

Policy reviewed October 10, 2026. Target Circle Bonuses are personalized, and dates, thresholds, eligible items, stores and fulfillment methods can differ by account and offer. Examples below are illustrative, not live offers.

Why a Target Circle Bonus may not be applying

A missing bonus usually comes down to one of five issues: the bonus was not activated, the transaction was tied to a different account, the purchase did not satisfy a specific term, the order has not reached the stage when progress posts, or a return or cancellation changed the qualifying amount.

Target’s current Target Circle Bonus help page says members must activate the bonus, complete the qualifying purchase or action and identify themselves as a Target Circle member. The individual bonus in your account controls. A screenshot from someone else does not establish that your account has the same offer.

1. Find the exact bonus and read its terms again

Sign in to the Target account you used for the purchase. On Target.com, open Target Circle and go to the Deals area. In the Target app, open the Target Circle area from Discover or My Target, then check the Saved section. Target’s saved-offer instructions explain where to manage bonuses, coupons and rebates.

Open the bonus itself and record:

  • the activation and expiration dates;
  • the required number of purchases, actions or spending amount;
  • whether the bonus is valid in store, online, for Drive Up, Order Pickup or Same Day Delivery;
  • any excluded products, departments, services or payment types;
  • whether each qualifying transaction has a minimum amount; and
  • the reward and when Target says it will appear.

Personalized does not mean permanent. Target says only bonuses currently shown on your Target Circle Deals page and valid at purchase can be redeemed. Unless an offer says otherwise, Target’s general bonus terms state that bonuses expire at 11:59 p.m. Pacific on the displayed expiration date. Use the date and time printed in your offer rather than assuming midnight in your own time zone.

2. Confirm that the bonus was activated before the purchase

Many ordinary Target Circle deals apply automatically when you identify as a member, but Target Circle Bonuses still require activation or application. That difference is easy to miss. Seeing a bonus in the app is not the same as activating it.

  1. Open the bonus in your account.
  2. Check for an active, saved or applied state rather than an “activate” button.
  3. Confirm that activation occurred before the qualifying purchase.
  4. For an online order, verify that the bonus remained active during checkout.

Target’s general terms say bonuses cannot be applied to previous purchases. Activating after checkout therefore should not be treated as a reliable fix. If the activation state is unclear, save the current offer details and use Target’s official help channel instead of making another purchase to test it.

3. Make sure the purchase used the same Target Circle account

For online orders, the order and bonus should be under the same signed-in account. For an in-store purchase, identify yourself at checkout using the Wallet barcode, a valid printed barcode or the telephone number attached to your account. Target says photographs of barcodes are not accepted.

Compare the email address or phone number on the order or receipt with the account that shows the bonus. A household member’s order may not count toward your personalized progress. Target’s terms permit one membership per guest and do not allow rewards to be combined or transferred between accounts.

If you checked out as a guest, used a different household account or entered the wrong phone number, collect the receipt and contact Target. Do not assume a later account change will automatically attach the transaction.

4. Wait for the correct fulfillment event

The progress clock depends on how you bought the items:

When Target says Circle Bonus progress can advance
Purchase method When to look for progress
In-store purchase Allow up to 24 hours after purchase.
Shipped online order After the qualifying items ship, not merely when the order is placed.
Order Pickup or Drive Up After the order is ready for and completed through pickup.
Same Day Delivery After the order is delivered by the shopper.
Preorder Only if the item ships during the stated bonus period, according to Target’s general terms.

Target’s progress-timing guidance is especially important for pickup and shipping orders. A pending authorization or an order-confirmation email does not necessarily mean the bonus should already be complete.

5. Recalculate the qualifying subtotal

The checkout total can be higher than the amount that counts toward a bonus. Target’s general terms say fees and tips do not count toward a minimum-purchase threshold, and taxes are not part of the qualifying amount. The individual offer can also exclude items that do not earn Target Circle Rewards.

Consider a hypothetical “spend $50” bonus. Your checkout screen shows:

  • $48 of qualifying merchandise;
  • $6 in tax; and
  • $4 in delivery fees and tips.

The amount paid is $58, but the illustrative qualifying merchandise subtotal is still $48. Because $48 is below a $50 requirement, the higher checkout total would not solve the shortfall. This is example math, not a statement about a live Target bonus.

Review every line in the basket rather than relying on the final card charge. If the bonus requires multiple purchases, also check whether it requires a minimum qualifying amount in each transaction. A returned, canceled or substituted item can change the amount after checkout.

6. Check the required channel, service and dates

A bonus may be in-store only, online only or tied to a service such as Drive Up or Order Pickup. A qualifying product bought through the wrong channel can fail even when the item and subtotal look correct. Likewise, an order placed before the deadline may not qualify if the terms require shipment during the bonus period.

Use the offer wording literally. “Place two qualifying orders” is not the same as “buy two items.” “Spend $40 in one purchase” is not the same as accumulating $40 over several orders. “Order Pickup” does not automatically include shipping or Same Day Delivery.

Location and inventory also matter. Target notes that pricing, promotions and availability can vary by store and market. If you changed your selected store, reopen the offer and confirm that it remains available for the location and fulfillment method you intend to use.

7. Look for excluded items or a changed order

The general Target Circle terms contain categories that do not earn Target Circle Rewards, and individual bonuses can be narrower. Gift cards, fees, tips and other excluded charges should not be used to pad a threshold. Read the live terms rather than applying a remembered exclusion list to every offer.

Then compare the final fulfilled order with the original cart:

  • Was an item canceled because it was out of stock?
  • Did a pickup item get removed?
  • Was a substitution outside the eligible product set?
  • Did a partial return reduce the qualifying total?
  • Was a preorder shipped after the bonus period?

Target states that rewards earned from a bonus can be deducted if a return, reversal or cancellation means the purchase no longer qualifies. Treat the fulfilled receipt—not the first cart estimate—as the final evidence.

8. Check the progress screen and reward balance separately

A progress indicator and a spendable reward are not the same stage. First, the qualifying action must post. Then, after a completed bonus that awards Target Circle Rewards, the reward becomes available for a future eligible purchase.

Open your Target Circle activity and saved offers, then check both the bonus progress and the reward balance. Target’s Circle activity page can help you distinguish an unposted transaction from a completed bonus whose reward has already moved into the balance.

If you receive the reward, record it once. Do not subtract it from the original order as though it were an instant discount and then count it again when you redeem it. The method used in our cash-back versus instant-discount guide works here too: track “paid today,” “reward earned” and “reward used” as separate lines.

9. Contact Target with a complete record

After the relevant waiting period has passed, use Target’s official contact options. Prepare:

  • the order number or receipt;
  • the Target Circle account email or phone number used;
  • the bonus name, dates and requirements;
  • the final fulfilled item list and qualifying subtotal;
  • the fulfillment method and completion time; and
  • a screenshot of the offer terms and current progress page.

Do not post a full receipt, phone number, barcode or account details publicly. Provide sensitive information only through Target’s authenticated support process.

Common mistakes that cost more than the bonus is worth

  • Buying filler items without checking eligibility. A $7 unneeded product to reach a $5 reward leaves you spending more.
  • Repeating the order too soon. Online progress may wait for fulfillment, and duplicates create return work.
  • Counting tax, tips or fees toward a threshold. A large final total can still miss the qualifying subtotal.
  • Assuming another shopper’s offer applies. Bonuses can be personalized and account-specific.
  • Ignoring canceled items. The fulfilled basket may fall below the threshold.
  • Letting a reward change the shopping plan. A reward has value only when used on a planned eligible purchase.

Before adding anything to a basket, compare its normal useful value with the reward. Our unit-price guide can help when the bonus tempts you to switch pack sizes.

When a Target Circle Bonus is not worth chasing

Skip the bonus when reaching it requires products you would not otherwise buy, a more expensive fulfillment method, an unnecessary trip or a quantity likely to go unused. Also skip it when the offer terms are so narrow that you cannot verify qualification before paying.

Use simple break-even math. If you need $12 of extra merchandise to unlock an $8 reward, the decision costs at least $4 more unless those extra items were already in your plan and worth their price. If the products are useful, compare their unit prices with acceptable alternatives before calling the reward savings.

Target Circle Bonus troubleshooting checklist

  • Open the exact bonus in the same signed-in account.
  • Confirm it was activated before purchase.
  • Read the dates, channel, service, threshold and exclusions.
  • Verify the account was identified at checkout.
  • Recalculate the qualifying merchandise subtotal without tax, fees or tips.
  • Compare the final fulfilled order with the original cart.
  • Wait until shipment, pickup or delivery, plus the stated processing time.
  • Check both bonus progress and the reward balance.
  • Keep the receipt and offer terms before contacting Target.
  • Do not place a duplicate order solely to force progress.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Target Circle Bonus take to show?

Target says to allow up to 24 hours after an in-store purchase. For online orders, progress appears after shipment, pickup or Same Day Delivery rather than immediately after order placement.

Does tax count toward a Target Circle Bonus threshold?

Target’s general bonus terms say taxes are not part of the qualifying purchase amount. Fees and tips also do not count. Check the individual bonus for other exclusions.

Can I activate a Target Circle Bonus after buying?

Target says bonuses must be activated and cannot be applied to previous purchases. If you believe the offer was active but progress is missing, keep the receipt and contact Target after the processing window.

Do canceled or returned items affect a Target Circle Bonus?

Yes. A canceled, reversed or returned purchase can stop qualification or cause an awarded reward to be deducted if the remaining purchase no longer meets the terms.

Why is my online order not counting yet?

The order may not have reached the required fulfillment stage. Target says online progress advances when items ship, are picked up or are delivered by a Same Day Delivery shopper.

Where can I find my Target Circle Bonus?

Sign in and open Target Circle Deals on Target.com, or use the Target Circle area in the Target app and review saved offers. Availability is personalized, so an offer may not appear in every account.
