Choosing a toy is about more than picking what looks fun. Before buying or giving a toy, take a moment to match it to the child’s age, abilities, home environment, and the safety information on the packaging.
Read the label first
- Follow the age guidance and warnings on the package.
- Choose toys that fit the child’s interests and abilities—not only their age.
- Keep small parts, small balls, and toys with small pieces away from children under 3.
- Check for special safety information on batteries, magnets, projectiles, or riding toys.
Plan for the whole household
Consider younger siblings and visiting children when selecting toys with small parts, strong magnets, sharp edges, or other hazards. A toy suitable for an older child may not be appropriate where a younger child can reach it.
After gifts are opened
- Remove and discard plastic wrapping and packaging promptly.
- Check that battery compartments are secured as directed.
- Set aside helmets and other safety gear with scooters or riding toys.
- Check the CPSC recall database if you have a concern about a specific product.
Source notes
CPSC’s toy safety guidance recommends matching toys to children’s abilities, following age guidance, and keeping small parts and small balls away from children under 3. Always follow the specific manufacturer instructions for the toy.
