Giving can be meaningful, but a rushed appeal can make it hard to see where the money goes. Use this checklist before donating to a charity you do not already know. It is a research guide, not an endorsement of any organization.

Verify the organization

  • Visit the organization’s own website and look for a clear description of its programs and how it uses donations.
  • Search the exact name with terms such as “complaint,” “review,” “rating,” or “scam.”
  • If tax deductibility matters to you, confirm the organization’s tax status through the IRS tool referenced by the FTC.
  • Check whether the charity and fundraiser are registered with the appropriate state regulator when applicable.

Slow down a high-pressure request

Do not treat an unexpected call, text, social post, or email as proof that a fundraiser is legitimate. A real cause will still exist after you take time to research it. Carefully compare the name with the organization you intended to support; look-alike names can be confusing.

Choose a payment method deliberately

Keep a record of the charity name, date, amount, payment method, and confirmation. The FTC advises caution when a caller demands payment by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or a payment app. Read the donation platform’s fees and delivery terms when a platform is involved.

Keep a simple donation record

  1. Save the confirmation and any receipt.
  2. Record the organization’s legal name and website.
  3. Keep a note of what the gift supports, if stated.
  4. Review your card or bank statement to make sure the charge matches what you authorized.

Source notes

The FTC’s charity guidance recommends researching the charity, checking its website and registration, and confirming tax status when relevant. Its donation-scam alert advises people not to be rushed and to be careful about payment methods.
