Razor Cartridge Refills: Match the Handle Before Buying

A razor refill pack is useful only if its cartridges fit the handle you own. Blade count, package color and a familiar brand name are starting clues, not a complete compatibility check. Match the handle family first, then compare the packs you can actually use.

Separate the handle system from the blade count

Write down the exact name on the handle or its original packaging. Keep the brand, range and any model detail together. A description such as “five-blade razor” describes part of the cartridge; it does not identify every connection that could attach to your handle.

Also distinguish cartridge refills from disposable razors and other blade formats. A cartridge pack supplies replacement heads for a compatible reusable handle. A package of complete disposable razors is a different purchase. Check the contents rather than treating every item described as a razor blade as interchangeable.

Use a compatibility chart for the specific range

The official Gillette compatibility chart groups Fusion, ProGlide, ProShield, SkinGuard and Gillette5 systems separately from the MACH3 and Gillette3 group. It also identifies a separate refill for the GilletteLabs Heated Razor. Use the row for your handle rather than extending one row to the entire brand.

For a concrete example, the ProGlide refill page states compatibility with Gillette five-blade handles and explicitly excludes GilletteLabs. That exclusion matters even when two packages both advertise multiple blades. This example establishes the stated fit of that range; it does not establish a universal fit for unrelated handles.

Read the package contents in two separate columns

Package description What to count
Refills only The number of complete replacement cartridges.
Starter kit The handle and the included cartridges separately.
Mixed grooming bundle Cartridges separately from gel, a stand, a cover or other accessories.
Multiple inner packs The cartridge quantity in each pack and the total across the order.

A larger number printed on a bundle can describe pieces rather than refills. Compare the detailed contents with the pack image and the selected option. If a retailer offers a handle kit and a refill-only pack on the same page, check which one remains selected before ordering.

Compare a restock with replacing the whole system

If your current handle meets your needs, a compatible refill pack avoids buying another handle just to obtain cartridges. If you are deliberately changing systems, compare the complete starter kit with the replacement packs you expect to use later. An introductory kit and a routine refill purchase solve different shopping problems.

There is no fixed pack size that is right for every household. Consider how many compatible handles are in use and how much unopened stock you already have. Keep different handle families identifiable so a shared bathroom drawer does not turn a correct purchase into a confusing one.

Keep recurring orders tied to the exact cartridge

Before starting repeat deliveries, check the selected refill family, pack quantity and delivery interval. Revisit those details if you replace the handle. A subscription for an older system does not become compatible because a new razor uses the same brand.

Compare the current delivered total for the same usable refill count. Treat a first-order promotion separately from later shipments, and follow the manufacturer’s product and replacement instructions. This guide compares fit and package contents; it does not promise a shaving result or a particular cartridge lifespan.

Your refill shopping note

  • Exact handle brand and family.
  • Compatible cartridge names and any stated exclusions.
  • Number of complete cartridges, separate from accessories.
  • The selected pack, seller and purchase option.
  • Any recurring delivery you will need to review after changing handles.
